Meet Ms. Laura Hamilton, our Early Years Specialist and Senior Leadership Staff member.
Laura Hamilton is our Early Years Coordinator and Year Three Class Teacher at The Priory Preparatory School. She has experience of teaching in the UK, the Middle East and in Nigeria.
At twenty one she graduated from Scotland’s Queen Margaret University with a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Politics. Later she graduated from Edinburgh University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education where she was awarded distinction by the University for her written essays and a final presentation about Literacy in the Early Years.
Laura taught in the UK before making a move to Qatar where she taught at The Cambridge International School for Girls in Doha. Laura has now settled in Nigeria. Before moving to The Priory Preparatory School, she was employed by St Saviour’s School, Ikoyi. She worked there for three years as their Reception Teacher and Early Years Specialist.
Laura has a great passion for teaching and believes it is a teacher’s role to help children develop a love of learning. She believes this begins in the early years when a child is still making sense of their world and what they can do. In her own words:
‘Young children deserve an encouraging, play filled, environment but one in which success and academics are of key importance. Children’s natural talents and interests should be expanded, explored and nurtured.’ Laura’s classroom is warm, colourful and full of laughter. Her teaching is responsive, exciting, engaging and comprehensive.
Laura’s special interest in Literacy extends to her writing short stories and books and, in her own time, she provides support and tutoring to children preparing for 11+ and 13+ examinations or who just wish to improve their comprehension and composition skills.
Furthermore Laura paints in her free time and is also learning to play the guitar.
Laura is also the Vice Chieftain of The Lagos Caledonian Society, a peer elected position she holds for the second year running.
